I've been struggling with this one - at the "pre-seed" stage, balancing the 'Future Vision' with the 'From Here' reality.
The way I'm currently thinking about it is to have an answer when people ask 'What is the Future Vision' question ... but don't spend too much time there myself and don't stress if building in the 'From Here' reality means we never get to the original 'Future Vision'. So perhaps 97% of mental energy is 'From Here' and 3% is 'Future Vision'.
Is that consistent with your takeaway? Sounds like an awesome book
Yeah unfortunately I think you have to play the game for fundraising and recruiting, because the "to there" just SOUNDS so much better. So you've got to be able to switch gears and sell the vision, while not being committed to it and focusing entirely on where to go "from here".
Putting it differently - there are a lot of different ways to describe your business. There's the version that resonates with customers, which is different from the version that resonates with investors & potential employees, which is different from the underlying logic of your business. For 2 of the 3, "to there" thinking works. For 1 of the 3, it kills you. Sigh
